Gawai Dayak is one of the cultural events that held in Pontianak, Kalimantan West. It is one of the exotic events in this modern era, because it’s not only show the traditional ceremony but also traditional food and beverage , and many more.
If we see from the content or the place , gawai dayak is not purely traditional events, because it’s usually based on the development of this era. Now gawai dayak is the harvest ceremony, and it has a different name for each place in Kalimantan West, for example are : Hulu people say it with gawai , maka “Dio” in Sambas and Dange in Putusibau .
At the time, Gawai Dayak is usually held in the village, or local people call it with Ketimanggungan. Gawai Dayak has the exclusive food and beverage , for example are : Salika / poe’, tumpi’(cucur) and many more. The food must be taken from the harvest storage. A long of development in this era, Gawai Dayak not only happen in some village but also in several big city in Kalimantan West, like : Pontianak and Sambas or Landak. Something that make this event so interesting is the dayaknese show us the spectacular parade.
Gawai Dayak is another name of post harvest celebration in West Kalimantan, but overall gawai dayak is the same with “Naik Dango” ( a kind of cultural events in West Kalimantan) . Both of them are to celebrating the success of post harvest and to celebrate or to thank the healthy and safety from Jubata ( a kind of God in dayaknese believing) . Beside that the dayaknese hope to Jubata can increase the agricultural of food.
Before the event held, the dayaknese reciting the mantras or local people call it with “Nyangahatn”. There are 18 steps of Gawai Dayak ceremony, and must be started by Nyanghatn and the goal is to inform and ask the blessing to Jubata, hope the parade / festival will be okay for tomorrow. Nyanghatn take 3 places : On the living room, is to summon the spirit or the soul of rice that hasn’t been returned , on the granary, is to gather the spirit and the last one is on the jars of rice, is to survive or to blessing the rice to not run out quickly.
Nyangahatn is the main step to express the religious part of dayaknese or the simbol of religious ceremony. There are 4 steps of Nyangahatn : Matik. Ngalantekatn, mibis, and ngadap buis. Matik is to inform the family to ancestral spirit. Ngalantekatn is a hope to make all family still can be survived. Mibis is hope to make something dirt can be clean and the last one is Ngadap Buis is a step to accepting the offerings (Sesajen) . But in this era, there is a simplified steps of Nyangahatn : It’s only the simplified pray and the simply offerings (sesajen in Indonesia) , this simplified nyangahatn call it Bambangan.
Gawai Dayak is taken from the myth in Pontianak , the story of Baruang Kulup. This story begin with a spring of rice in the mountain’s Jubata then there is a sparrow which was stole and fall into the hands of jack. In the end of story Jubata runaway from his village because he got married with human.
